Tender Flames Art Exhibition: Fundraising for Young Abuse Support (YAS)

SASHA recently organised an art exhibition fundraising event to support the charity Young Abuse Support. This event not only showcased a diverse range of artwork, including 3D installations and large-scale paintings but also featured captivating spoken word poetry. They were led by SASHA's welfare officer, Lauren Royall, a talented second-year art student at the University of Leeds, the event aimed to raise funds and awareness for young people who are victims of abuse. With the support of 18 poetry speakers and local artists selling their products, this event brought together the community in an inspiring and meaningful way.

“The exhibition ‘Tender Flames’ was an exciting and dynamic way to empower and support victims/survivors of abuse through creative activism which became an overwhelmingly beautiful night. Not to speak for everyone but I think we all felt at least a little bit emotional whilst also coming away from the evening inspired. I exhibited a few pieces and amongst these was my latest painting - a triptych I painted over the summer. I approach painting as a form of therapy and so it’s beautiful to then share the work that I’ve made at an event which can then be healing and heartwarming for others. I love intertwining my practice with activism and it’s events like these that make me feel confident that my work has a purpose. Through my role as a welfare officer at SASHA, I am keen to show survivors/victims the ways in which art is healing and open up conversations. If you’re interested in keeping up to date with my work follow @royllart on Instagram!” - Lauren (Welfare Officer)

Young Abuse Support is a survivor-led charity which aims to raise awareness of Young Partner Domestic Abuse and provide free trauma-informed resources to schools. SASHA and YAS have always had closely aligned goals, so it was our pleasure to support them at this event. To learn more about YAS you can find several links here or find them on Instagram @youngabusesupport.

The success of the art exhibition fundraising event was only possible with the support and participation of the community. SASHA is immensely grateful to all those who attended the event, showing their solidarity and commitment to helping young abuse victims. The local artists who sold their products at the event contributed to the fundraising efforts and showcased the community's talent and creativity. Additionally, SASHA would like to extend a thank you to Headrow House for providing the space to hold this event. Together, through art and support, we can make a difference in the lives of young abuse victims.
